The Wild Beauty of Whatipu Beach - Exploring Auckland Beaches.
Whatipu beach is one of the west coast beaches of Auckland, New Zealand, which is managed by Auckland Council. Very beautiful beach and a good destination for a one day picnic.
Approximately 1hr drive from Auckland City. We started, from our place, at 12.30pm and it took 55 minutes to reach there. The drive was good, no heavy traffic and the weather was good too. On the way to Whatipu beach, there are small beaches, parks and fishing points. We stopped there, took some photos, enjoyed the beauty of the seashore and started our journey to the beach.
We have to drive through an unsealed narrow and curvy road around 20 to 25 minutes to reach the beach. Make sure that you drive slowly and carefully.
It was not crowded on that day. There were enough parking spaces. Toilet facility is also available there.
Camping facility is available, but we need to get the permit to camp there. To reach the beach, we have to walk 15 mnts through the black sand. We were wearing sandals and I found it very difficult to walk through the black sand since the sand was really hot. My recommendation is, if you are planning a trip in summer, a pair of shoes will be handy. Don't forget to apply sunscreen lotion.
It's a beautiful beach. The rocks nearby the beach, the lighthouse on the top of a rock, black sand and the blue water makes the place really special and beautiful.
Swimming is not safe here. The beach doesn't have a lifeguard or a surf patrol.
Other black sand beaches of Auckland are Piha, Karekare, Muriwai and Bethels beach.
There are walking tracks and caves close to the beach, but we didn't get time to explore these options. The waves look clam but unsafe for swimming due to rips/ current.
We really enjoyed the stunning beauty of this beach.
